Before Technicolor: Early Color on Film

The interesting “Before Technicolor: Early Color on Film” MoMA exhibition explores the history of color cinematography before the invention of Technicolor. 

Take a fascinating trip through old cinema reels, which provide an insight into the technical innovations and artistic experiments of the first filmmakers to employ color on the big screen. 

These avant-garde films illuminate a little-known period in cinema’s history with vivid colors and creative inventiveness.

The special focus is on American and French films produced from the mid-1890s through the mid-1930s.

Other features of the exhibition include a suite of hand-colored Butterfly and Serpentine dance films, the stencil-colored L’Antre Infernal(1905), and many more.

LaToya Ruby Frazier: Monuments of Solidarity

From furniture to textiles, this exhibition showcases the creativity and innovation of designers from Argentina to Venezuela.

This exhibition will explore these tensions through furniture, appliances, posters, textiles, ceramics, photographs, and paintings.

However, there is a catch! This entire exhibition is in Spanish, making it difficult for English and other language speakers to enjoy.

This is so because this MoMA current exhibit is a part of the MoMA en Espanol (MoMA in Spanish).

Isaac Julien: Lessons of the Hour

Explore the life of abolitionist Frederick Douglass through this captivating video installation. Learn his legacy and how his ideas continue to resonate today.

This video installation’s ten screens feature a nonlinear narrative that melds Douglass’s life and work with excerpts from some of his speeches, literary works, and personal correspondence.

Douglass was the most photographed American of his era, and he understood that portraiture could challenge racist tropes.

He also understood its capabilities to advance the freedom and civil rights of Black Americans and subjugated people worldwide.

Projects: Tadáskía

Experience the art of Tadáskía, who uses drawing and sculpture to explore themes of change and freedom. Her vibrant artwork invites you to see the world in new ways.

It is one of the best MoMA exhibits and part of The Elaine Dannheiser Projects Series. 

She foregrounds improvisation across drawing, sculpture, and other mediums.

Tadaskia conveys a sense of fluidity through her dynamic mark-making and nuanced imagery.

This exhibition is the artist’s first solo presentation in the United States. In response to the gallery space, she produced a monumental wall drawing and a set of sculptures. 

As Tadáskía asserts, alongside the central role of change, “the main character in the work is time.”

Leslie Thornton’s HANDMADE

Explore the unique creations of Leslie Thornton, an artist whose work spans various mediums.

From handcrafted pieces to experimental installations, her art pushes the boundaries of traditional art forms. This MoMA exhibition is a part of the Hyundai Card Digital Wall.

Leslie Thornton has probed how we see and make sense of the world for over 50 years.

Thortons’ newest work, HANDMADE (2023), is a video diptych that juxtaposes natural phenomena with technological discovery and is a must-see at MoMA.

SOUND MACHINES is an online exhibition where seven artists explore the strange world of sound through new technologies.

Through music and multimedia installations, Smith invites audiences to take a journey of love, self-discovery, and sonic expression. 

The performances will be at 8 pm between July 10 and 14, 2024. 

The matinee performance on 14 July will be followed by a conversation between the artists and Martha Joseph, Phyllis Ann and Walter Borten, Assistant Curator of Media and Performance.

Alex Katz: Seasons

Explore the beauty of nature, from lush landscapes to stark winter scenes, through the eyes of Alex Katz. 

With vibrant paintings capturing the essence of each season, this exhibition celebrates Katz’s unique approach to interpreting the world around us. 

Alex Katz: Seasons includes four featured paintings that chronicle the changing of the seasons, from spring, summer, and fall’s vibrant colors to winter’s star palette.

The works included in this MoMA exhibit belong to a new suite of more than 100 paintings created by Alex Katz in his New York studio since 2022.

The 2024 Studio Residency MoMA exhibition will feature choreographer, dancer, and artist Sarah Michelson herself.

This annual residency serves a vital role by offering space for collaboration, experimentation, and incubation of new projects and providing growth opportunities to artists.

Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue

Celebrate the legacy of Robert Frank with this captivating exhibition.

Life Dances On offers a fresh perspective on Frank’s influential career, from iconic photographs to experimental films, coinciding with the centennial of Frank’s birth.

This MoMA exhibition will explore his restless experimentation with mediums such as photography, film, and books and his dialogues with other artists.

Visitors can explore around 200 works made over six decades until the artist’s death in 2019.

Several of these are drawn from MoMA’s extensive collection and materials that have never before been exhibited.

The world of Thomas Schütte is a diverse body of work spanning sculpture, drawing, and installation. 

This MoMA exhibition showcases Schütte’s boundless creativity and imagination with watercolors, figurative sculptures, ceramics, architectural models and more.

This MoMA exhibition is the most comprehensive of Schütte’s career in the US. It explores a variety of his work and locates the lines that can connect a bunker to a bust.

Nour Mobarak: Dafne Phono

Prepare to be mesmerized by the multimedia installations of Nour Mobarak, a Lebanese American artist preparing for her first museum exhibition in NYC at MoMA.

Mobarak invites audiences to explore identity, memory, and belonging themes through sound, sculpture, and performance. 

In Dafne Phono, Nour Mobarak draws analogies between linguistic structure and the biological processes of mycelium.

She has attempted to explore how both of these are governed by systems of repetition, decomposition, and regeneration and how they relate to political power and its broader forces.

  • Pacita Abad

MoMA Ps1 brings the most exclusive collection of the noted Filipina-American artist Pacita Abad in a first retrospective exhibition at MoMA PS1.

This exhibition will include over 50 works. Most of these works have never been publicly displayed, marking their debut at this esteemed exhibition.

The exhibition will accompany the first major publication of Pacita Abad’s precious work, making it even more significant.

Abad is renowned for her trapunto, a quilted painting delicately made by stitching and stuffing her canvases. 

This differs from the usual practice of stretching them over a wooden frame, making it unique and special.

Explore Abad’s skills, enjoy her colorful and expressive artworks, and learn more about them as you visit the Pacita Abad exhibition at MoMA PS1.

  • YTO Barrada: Le Grand Soir

One of the most exciting MoMA PS1 current exhibits, YTO Barrada, takes you on a unique and insightful journey as you explore this exhibit.

Barrada is known for revealing the hidden political, material and personal narratives in architectural and geometric forms. 

The Le Grand Soir takes you on a whimsical journey across Morocco. 

The particular focus is on the Moroccans’ application of techniques, from martial arts and acrobatics to spiritual activities.

  • Melissa Cody: Webbed Skies

One of the best MoMA PS1 exhibitions, the Melissa Cody exhibit takes you through Cody, a fourth-generation Navajo weaver.

The exhibition will showcase over 30 weaveworks by Melissa Cody and include a new significant artwork curated just for this MoMA PS1 exhibition.

This unique exhibit will provide insight into Cody’s works and skills and educate you about Navajo Germantown weaving.

The Cody Foundation and The Deborah Buck Foundation are major sponsors of this exhibition. Komal Shah and Gaurav Garg are providing additional support.

  • Regina Jose Galindo: Tierra

One of the most looked-forward-to MoMA PS1 exhibitions, Regina Jose Galindo: Tierra, will be displayed for the first time since entering the MoMA.

This unique MoMA PS1 exhibit delves into the intricacies of connections between labor, resources and human life in Guatemala.

This exhibit presents Galindo standing naked on a piece of grassy land excavated by a bulldozer, forcing viewers to think about what they see.

This eye-opening and insightful exhibition is one of the best MoMA PS1 current exhibits and is a must-see.

When: 4 April to 26 August 2024.

  • Reynaldo Riveria: Fistful of Love/Tambien la belleza

Head to this MoMA PS1 exhibit to see the first solo museum exhibition of the Mexican artist Reynaldo Riveria this spring and see his iconic works.

This exhibit will also include some of Riveria’s never-before-seen photographs dug from his archives.

The highlight of this MoMA PS1 current exhibit is the presentation of more than 40 black-and-white photos spanning the 1980s through the present day.

The exhibition includes a newly edited film from Reynaldo Riveria’s Hi8 footage.

Explore the artistic photography of Riveria, a self-taught photographer who captured those closest to him at the start of his career, including his sisters.

When: 16 May to 9 September 2024.

  • Hard Ground

Hard Ground is a one-of-a-kind MoMA PS1 exhibition, and it is dedicated to not one but seven New York artists.

These artists employ erosion, subtraction and compression processes and present artworks that use an economy of means to hold action residues.

Here, you can see sculptures by Matt Browning that emerge from a single rock, Dora Budor’s frottages and Lexapro against the studio’s walls and floors.

Jody Graf, Assistant Curator at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC, organizes this exhibition.

  • Little Manila Queens: Mabuhay!

This MoMA PS1 current exhibit preserves the debut projects in Homeroom by Little Manila Queens Bayanihan, an artists’ and cultural workers’ collective.

The grassroots collective focuses on showcasing, saving and promoting artworks by workers of diasporic Filipino communities in Queens, Woodside and NYC.

This MoMA PS1 exhibit studies the impact of migration policies, which have led to the deployment of Filipino workers outside the country.

The special focus is on the Woodside Little Manila neighborhood. The enriching MoMA PS1 exhibition will help you learn more about this important cause.

Upcoming Exhibitions at MoMA PS1

  • Ceremonies out of the Air-Ralph Lemon

Dedicated to the brilliance of the artist Ralph Lemon, this is one of the best MoMA PS1 exhibitions that you should check out.

This major exhibition combines over 40 artworks made by Lemon over the last decade across several disciplines. 

It also marks the debut of numerous collaborations. Lemon was one of the most notable figures to emerge from New York’s downtown scene.

His ability to engage deeply with the USA’s postmodern dance and capacity for storytelling through action and movement attracted admirers.

This exhibition comprises dance, drawings, photos, sculptures, paintings and videos throughout MoMA PS1’s expansive galleries on the third floor.
